Abstract
Markman & Dietrich (1998) argue that the notion of a
"representation" should be replaced by the less contentious one of
a "mediating state." They also believe that many mediating states
will have the property of being inherently rule-governed. In
arguing for this conclusion Markman & Dietrich ignore their own
observation that being described by rules is not the same as using
them inherently.
